{Day At The Park–Part 1}

It’s been a crazy Winter, so far. Warm, then cold, rainy, then dry – barely any snow. But we did finally make it out to a newly-constructed park/playground for some much-needed recreation. The funny thing about New York City is that parks pop up anywhere and everywhere, nested smack in the middle of busy city neighborhoods, or nestled away, inconspicuously in little outer-borough “suburban” neighborhoods.

I always love exploring the new ones, as does my little girl – the amenities, structures, design. And of course, it gives me an opportunity to pull out my camera and get some outdoors photos, which I rarely get to do!

This particular park is in Queens, NY, and actually was still under construction in some areas.

While making some space on my hard drive, I came across these two sets of Pinterest Icons that never saw the light of day. The first set, a collection of gray icons in varying shades, were originally made upon request for a client who never had the courtesy to email me back and say that she did or didn’t like them or to even say “Thank You”. So basically, they’re yours now. :)

Here’s another set I made for myself, but changed my mind on my blog design, as I often do. :) I call them the Vintage Damask Set.

{Project 52} Week #8

Well, here we are, at week eight, and two months in! How awesome is that!

I’m feeling so good about my progress, overall. I’m becoming more and more comfortable manually focusing and adjusting the settings on my camera. You really do take better photos when you control the camera, instead of the other way around.

And a few more, cus who doesn’t like Oreo cookies with yellow filling??

A big thanks to you for still being here, two months later! I’ve still got a ways to go and I hope you’ll continue to stick around for the ride. :)

{Mommy’s Bed}

She loves to play in my bed. On any given day, you may find Barbies, baby dolls, Little People, or crayons – yes, crayons! I won’t tell you things I’ve rolled over on in the middle of the night. She even likes to sleep in my bed! But she’s almost five, so I’m working on that.

Here she is on a lazy, Sunday morning, just coloring away!

I love the way the sun plays with the colors in her hair. My processing gives her hair a rusty, reddish color, but it’s actually a warm, Auburn brown with sparkly, radiant gold streaks. I can only imagine she gets that from her Dad, since he was a full blonde, as a child.

She’s very serious about her artwork. Can you tell. :)

These photos are part of the set which includes the photo I used for Project 52, Week #7. I allow myself to go against my no-extreme processing rule outside of Project 52, so I really had fun with these. I still struggle with backlighting and shadows when shooting in bright light, but sometimes you have to choose – capture the moment, or risk losing it while you fiddle with your camera.

{Project 52} Week #7

Happy Wednesday, and welcome to Week #7 of Project 52, 2012! Can you believe we’re almost two months in??

And by the way, how was your Valentine’s Day? I, unfortunately, had to work last night, but I’m off today, and we’re headed out to dinner a bit later!

Anyway, let’s get this thing started! I gave a little suggestion/ inspiration with the word “Love” as your theme for this week, but as always, feel free to interpret these suggestions any way you want, or not at all. The important thing is to pick up the camera and SHOOT!

I “love” to see my daughter engrossed in creativity. Sure the Wii is okay every now and then, as are toys and the boob tube. Kids will be kids. But from day one, I’ve been encouraging her to be creative, imaginative, and to learn to play independently. She does have an older brother and sister, but they’re 10 and 15 years older than her, respectively, so in a way, it’s just like being an only child. She colors, draws, paints, and loves arts and crafts. She even gets behind the camera from time to time! And I especially love that! :)

{Friday} Revelations

Whew!

I am beat!

It’s the end of the week and I am literally drained – physically, mentally, and emotionally. Twenty-twelve has started off as a very “strange” year. That’s the best word I can think of to describe it. So many things going on around me, and around the world in general – its just been a whirlwind of ups and downs, but mostly downs. I’ve thrown myself into blogging, now more than ever, as a productive distraction. Productive distraction. Sounds a bit like an oxymoron, doesn’t it lol? I’ve managed to block out the things that have been nagging at me by throwing myself into blogging more, but now I have to question how productive I’ve really been.

Blogging is supposed to be fun. No matter why you blog, it makes no sense to do it, unless you enjoy it. That’s just my opinion. And now that I’m looking at my personal experiences, I’m beginning to feel like I’m putting too much time into the “mechanics” of blogging, and not really enjoying the ride. Is my header right? How’s my navigation? Should I try a new commenting system? How many visits did I get today? What, only ONE comment on that post I stayed up until 2am working on??

Yeah, you know what I mean.

I’m getting a little weary with that mentality about blogging. I blogged, for years, from a family point of view, and when I discovered photography, I began incorporating that into my blogging regime. I realized that my loyal followers may not be very interested in my posts on photography, so I attempted to maintain two stand-alone blogs – one on family, one on photography. But that became too much. So, eventually, I shut both down, and started this blog here, looking for someplace where I could just find a balance. And almost a year later, I’m not sure I really have. But I think that has more to do with aiming to please readers, as opposed to aiming to please myself. Blogging everyday, trying to stay current and blog about the latest photography topics or trends, having a day by day blogging agenda, blogging in order to be able to enter other bloggers’ projects and link-ups, covering topics I’m not even sure I really care about in order to attract more comments and traffic – everything EXCEPT blogging for ME.

Let me be clear: I appreciate each and every last one of you who have come by, have followed, who have left comments, even if only as an obligation of reciprocity. Even those who pass through and don’t say anything at all. But I feel that if I spend too much time wondering why you haven’t come back, checking stats, trying to determine what posts YOU are most interested in, then that takes away from why I want to blog – which is to share my photos with the world, be inspired, and hopefully inspire you in the process.

Tickle My Whimsy is getting back to basics. Tickle My Whimsy doesn’t need a Twitter account or a Google+ page. If you’re on Google+, and Google is slowly but surely pushing everyone in that direction, you can follow my personal account by clicking on that button in the sidebar. Tickle My Whimsy doesn’t need sponsors or products to review. We’re not that kind of blog. We just want to enjoy ART. Custom graphics or icon design? Uh-uh. The time it takes for me to put a proposal together, go back and forth on emails, and try to create something that someone else will either like or not like, is just not worth it. My schedule only allows for me to do this on late nights and weekends, and that’s time that could be spent with my family. Graphic design is not my passion, and if I make anything else in the future, it will be strictly for my enjoyment and prerogative to share. With that being said, look for changes to some of the links in the navigation bar above.

If you’ve stuck around this long, into the post, I thank you. :)

I’ll still be here, I’ll still be blogging. But just on MY terms. Because I can’t remember the last time it was fun and didn’t feel like a project. I started this blog to share my photography. But I’m spending so much time engrossed in the blogging aspect, that I haven’t given the photography my all. And that’s not what I set out to do. I made a commitment at the beginning of the year to “Unplug, And Live In The Moment!” and that’s what I’m going to renew my commitment to doing.

I do hope you’ll still come by and visit. Not for any other reason other than because you enjoy reading Tickle My Whimsy. Just as it is. Without all the bells and whistles.

{Project 52} Week #6–The Late eDition

Happy Wednesday evening, all! It’s been a busy day! I didn’t have work (that’s why the linky goes up on Wednesdays), but besides still having to get the little one back and forth to school, I had a ton of chores to do today, including the dreaded laundry. I know – ugh!

And I know you guys (all three of you lol) were just dying to know what happened today, so here we are! :D

This photo is a part of the set which includes the photo in yesterday’s post. Minus any texture, and without any fancy edits, just sharpening and curves. Taken in my little homemade kitchen studio.

Dreaming Of {Spring}

I went to Michael’s recently, where I LOVE to purchase craft supplies and props for my still-life’s, and I must say, Spring was definitely in the air there! I swear, I could literally browse their aisles for hours! I usually make a one-a-month appointment with myself to go all alone, where I can shop totally uninterrupted. :)

I found this watering can there, and it was love at first sight! It’s actually much tinier than it appears here, because of the close-up and crop, but the design details, along with the mix of shine and rust, makes it quite charming, nonetheless. I’ve actually unintentionally started a collection. I’ve got a larger watering can and a water pail in the same design! I’d love to share more photos in this series later in the week, and I hope you come back to take a look. :)

I couldn’t even begin to tell you the recipe on this, except that I used Kim Klassen’s newest texture, “Evolution”. I must have used about 4 layers, going from Normal, to Multiply, to Color Burn, then adjusting and gently erasing until it was where I wanted. I really hope you like!

{Meet Fred}

Earlier this week, we acknowledged “Groundhog Day”, and although I can’t say I’m going to base much of the fate of Spring on a groundhog seeing his shadow, it is fun to play along!

This is Fred. The Pre-schoolers made these little paper groundhogs this week in class. Fred can poke his head up out of his “hole” and see (or not see) his shadow.

Very cute, don’t ya think? lol

(By the way, the little scar on her upper lip is a result of too much nose wiping, as we’ve been battling a runny nose the last few weeks. We’re much better now.)

I’m so treasuring these early years of her life. My two older kiddos grew up SO fast! I feel like I don’t want to miss a moment, because pretty soon, she’ll be all grown up, too!

{Project 52} Week #5

Hello! Welcome to a new week and a new month of Project 52!

Wow, January’s over, already! I usually try not to pay attention and just let the Winter months go by, because they can be such a drag. But I have to admit, I’m counting down, and can’t WAIT for Spring!

This week’s photo is a pure, clean ode to an old favorite. I remember when I couldn’t go a day without a cup lol. I still love Starbucks, but I enjoy it in moderation now.

This shot was taken in natural light, with an all white backdrop. I was trying out a new window angle in the home and, minus the shadows, I’m really liking the softer, “cooler” light. The background was a bit dull and grey-ish, but that was easily cleaned up in Photoshop.

And since I can’t resist just a little “oomph” in my photos, here’s another edit:

And what a melancholy day it is. Rainy, cold. It’s been a bit of a challenging week for me. Changes at work, things not in harmony at home, and the tragic passing of a close friend’s loved one.

Sigh.

All these things get me to thinking about how much I love me family. With all their craziness and drama, I love them still. Oftentimes, I let my mind roam off on a million worries and insecurities, and then I realize – none of this is in my hands. It’s all in God’s hands. The worries only take me away from the here and now. No amount of fretting will guarantee that these special moments will last forever, or that the people I love will be here forever.

My heart swells.

My friends, please stop, turn away from the computer, put the phone or iPad down, and listen to your children – with your eyes and your eyes. Let your Mom keep you on the phone for two hours if she just wants to talk. Tell your spouse “I Love You”. Regardless. “Yes, you p*** me off, but I still love you”.

Have no regrets. Or at least try not to.

I’ll leave you with an Instagram (yes, DROID photo, processed with Instagram) photo of my little Angel. She LOVES to take pictures with me. So, whatever I’m photographing, I have to pause and give her a turn. :)

{Project 52} Week #4

Hello, and welcome to Week #4!

Big thanks, again, to those who have been linking up with me, and who have been truly dedicated!

OK, so did you get a chance to capture anything this week that centered around the world “COLD”? If you did, great, if not, no problem! The prompts are just to get you inspired!

No rules, remember?

My “COLD” shot almost didn’t happen, but as luck would have it, we got a couple inches of snow last Saturday. This photo was taken early in the morning, on my way to work, while I was standing on my front steps. And it was taken with my camera phone. As I mentioned at that start, don’t feel that capturing a photo on your phone is cheating. What matters is capturing the moment. Using your phone an teach you a lot about framing and composition, and even about editing, because, let’s face it, those camera shots don’t always come out too great.

So what I did was (quick editing breakdown) bring the photo into Photoshop, straightened it, ran both a clarifying and black and white action, reduced the noise, and adjusted the brightness. Not bad, huh? So don’t knock those camera phone shots! :)

{Farewell Picnik}

Wow. My beloved Picnik is shutting down.

For those of you who may not know, Picnik, in my opinion, is one of THE best free photo editors out there – and the Premium version is even more awesome. But yet again, Google has taken something wonderful, and had it’s wicked way with it.

Long before I was blessed with the gift of Photoshop from a dear, online friend, Picnik was all I had, other than several versions of Paint Shop Pro. It was my “poor girl's Photoshop” lol. Over the years, I have edited many great photos with the help of Picnik.

I can’t think of many other programs that offered so many features, packed into a single program, for just $25 a year.

According to their press release, Picnik says they will be moving some of their features over to Google+. Well, I must say, I’m not impressed with what I see, so far, and they will have to add a lot more to impress me.

It may sound a bit dramatic but, in a way, I feel like it’s the end of an era. Picnik was a big part of my early journey into photography, and it will be sorely missed.

{Tools Of The Trade} A Home Photography Studio For Less

I’ve been meaning to do this for about two years, now – literally! By “this”, I mean show you some of the tools, or supplies, I use for my home still-life studio.

Let me first say that all of my still-life photos are taken in my kitchen because, well, that’s where the best light is in my home. I live in attached house with windows in the front, back, and along one side – which makes it really difficult to capture great light, and I usually try to do my shooting before 1pm, when the sun seems to be less harsh. Personally, I prefer to shoot on overcast (not rainy or dark) days, where the lighting is “cooler” and more balanced.

And these, here, are my basic supplies:

- sturdy poster board in different colors (the white backing can be used as reflectors)
- paper rolls, in basic colors (preferably white)
- scrapbook paper
- a white tri-fold presentation board, which makes a great reflector

A note on using scrapbook paper: I find it be very versatile, and cost-effective, and comes in so many beautiful designs and patterns. I’ve also read about using wrapping paper or the like, but a 180 page scrap paper book costs about $20, includes at least 3 sheets of each design, is stronger and reusable, can be used under and/or behind your subject, secured with a little transparent Scotch tape.

These supplies cost an average of $40, in total, and only need to be replenished when I want new scrap paper designs, when my paper rolls run out, or if my boards suffer any wear and tear – which is probably, for me, twice a year, if that!

{Project 52} Week #3

Well, my friends, we’re up to week #3! So far, so good right? Its been pretty smooth sailing!

With week #3 here, Id like you to take a look back at the three photos you’ve taken so far for this project.

Do you know where you’re going with this yet? Do you know where you’d like to go? Are you working on your own theme for P52 (street, still life, sport, night photography, etc.)?

For me, as I originally mentioned at the beginning, I really want to improve my “real-life” photography. By that, I mean that since 90% of my body of work in still-life (and I LOVE still-life), it hasn’t given me much opportunity to take photos of people, places, or nature. Still-life is controlled. People, especially children, move! Lighting conditions vary outdoors and in, and scenery changes on a constant basis. I'm ashamed to admit that after 2.5 years of owning my DSLR, I haven’t really taken enough time to “know” my camera.

In the beginning, I read my manual front to back, bought a book on digital photography to soak up some more knowledge, and joined lots and lots of photography groups. Then, I jumped in – head first – and never took the time to go back and learn more. Exposure triangle, ISO settings, Shutter Speed – these are all things you can know in theory, but what about when it comes time to actually applying them? These are the points that I know I won't master in 52 weeks, but I certainly intend to improve!

So with that being said, I've vowed to comprise at least 75% of my Project 52 with "real-life" photos. The other 25%, I'm dedicating to still-life, but unedited still-life - no textures or fancy photoshop techniques - just clean edits. I want to be able to see the sharpness in my photos improve naturally, I want to clearly notice the depth of field, and see the catchlights in my daughter's eyes. And although I'm trusting my own eyes more with manual focus, I want to become more comfortable with setting all the adjustments on my camera manually, and trusting that, with a little time and patience, I can get it right.

Hubby brought a bag of these home the other day, and we ate them all within 24 hours. I sliced, I photographed, we ate. :) The exposure was NOT what I was hoping for, and it was hard to adjust it without blowing out the contrast on the inside of the orange. It took some work but, with practice, I hope to be able to adjust my camera's setting in these situations, in camera, to avoid so much editing out of camera.

And before I forget, I was thinking about throwing a bit of a challenge into next week's Project 52 Link-Up. I think it'll keep things from getting mundane and keep the momentum going.

"COLD"

For those of us in the colder parts of the world, this should be an easy one, and my friends elsewhere, this will give you a chance to get creative. There are so many ways to interpret the word "cold", so thinking outside of the box is definitely a good thing! Remember, this is totally optional and you don't have to follow this suggested theme to participate.

Organizing {New Year, New Aspirations!}

A new year almost always brings in the sudden urge to organize, rearrange, and put things in our lives into perspective. Personally, I try to do this every few months. Now, that doesn’t mean that I’m super-organized, or that it even works. It’s just that I’ve always been addicted to list-making and I need to constantly keep myself in check when it comes to those things on my to do list.

Enter Springpad.

I’ve been using Springpad for a few years now and I love it! The interface is clean and well laid out (you can choose from different themes), and there are so many ways to catagorize and organize your content. After setting up your Notebooks, you can add tasks, notes, to-do lists, checklists, scan barcodes, and so much more. And what's awesome in that everything is updated across all your devices and platforms!

For my desktop.

On my Nook Tablet.

Even on my Android phone.

I love that you don't have to be in front of the computer to just "jot"omething down or make note of a great idea or thought. I've tried Evernote, and a few other applications, but I really like Springpad. It really has evolved since its first version.

So, I would say that if you're looking for a simplified way to organize, Springpad might be something you'd like to check out. No better time than now! :)

She’s something else, this little girl of mine. So sweet, so smart, so sassy, at times. But she’s all mine! Sometimes, I think I’ll just run out of energy one day, but I have no choice, she just keeps me going and going!

Aside from being busy with preschool and making new friends (yes, she’s only 4!), she sings, dances, draws, paints, talks, laughs, pouts, runs, jumps, chases the cat, and asks a zillion questions, from the time she wakes up, until the time she closes her eyes at night – whew!

But I wouldn’t have it any other way! Her kisses and hugs are food for my soul.

My Phrase For {2012}

That’s right. Phrase, not word

I’ve noticed a lot of folks in the blogosphere coming up with their new word for 2012 – something that will define their year, and give them goals to aspire to. After brainstorming, I couldn’t come up with a single word to define what I want 2012 to signify for me, so I came up with a phrase:

“Unplug, and live in the moment!”

That phrase holds a lot of meaning for me, and really says a lot about what I’ve been feeling lately – I’m just too darn connected to Social Media, these days! Like most people, my entire world is connected to that tiny mobile device that goes everywhere with me – my phone. I get up in the morning, I check all three email accounts, two different Twitter streams, and Facebook, all while having my morning coffee and peeling my eyelids apart. I walk my daughter to school and check into Foursquare. I get home, I do some “work” on the computer, and as I head to my job, I check all of said media outlets above as I ride the bus. Then I get to there, where I work, where else, on a computer for 7 – 8 hours a day. And during downtime at work, what do I do? You guessed it!

Ughh!!

Enough, already!

How many awesome sights have I missed while tweeting in the car, instead of enjoying the ride with my family? How many places have a been where I was too busy checking into Foursquare, instead of just enjoying the moment? The answer to that is probably one too many. So, for 2012, I decided that I’m going to start learning how to unplug, and live in the moment. Just like with photography, there’s a time to be behind the camera, and there’s a time to be in front of the camera.

Am I saying I’m completely cutting off Social Media? No, not at all. There are so many awesome uses for it that I’ve forgotten about – news, current events, weather – but I AM saying that I’m cutting out constantly being connected, to focus more on the world around me. To hear my kids when they’re talking to me, to see the sights around me and not just glance at them, and to be in the moment and remember them as more than just “updates”!

My Fave {Holiday} Gift!

I’ve been in love with cake pops since I first discovered them at Starbucks. Determined to make my own, I vowed that, for the Holidays, the little girl and I would make some together, but we never got around to it. So, in knowing how much I love those little bite size pieces of cake, my two older kiddos got together and got me this for Christmas:

Actual cake pops are rolled by hand, but this awesome little machine pops out the fluffiest, softest balls of cake ever! Most of them never even made it so a stick, they were so good!

Welcome To Project 52 {Week #1}

Yes, I know, we’re getting off to a late start in the day, but the linky is finally ready to go live!

I chose Wednesdays to host the challenge mainly because it’s my day off from work, and I knew I’d have the time to make sure it goes up at a reasonable time. Since I work until midnight, and don’t get home until almost one in the morning, putting it up Tuesday night may be a bit tricky, but ultimately, that is the aim.

I feel confident everything will eventually fall into place. :)

So, without further ado, here is my first photo for the 52 Weeks 2012 Challenge. I call it “Aftermath” lol.

I decided that as much as I LOVE artistic, still-life photography, that at least for the 52 Weeks Challenge, I would try to stay as close to “real-life” as possible. For one, it will allow me to sharpen my skills in different lighting situations, where with still-life artistic photos, I find the environment and post-processing is much more controlled. I also feel that capturing more everyday photos will leave me with more memories of the year, and more to look back on regarding family and our experiences when it’s complete.

{Project 52 2012 Goes Live January 4th!}

I have to say, Project 52 has been so rewarding for me this past year! For those of you who don't know what it is, Project 52 (aka 52 Weeks Photography Project, aka P52), is a challenge one accepts, to take one picture per week, for 52 weeks, in order to visually document the progress and improvement of their photography skills. Very similar to Project 365, where photos are taken on a daily instead of weekly basis, the aim is to be able to look back through your year's worth of photos and see where your photography has taken you (or you have taken it!)

The main reason I chose to do a Project 52, as opposed to a 365, is because of time. I'm a wife, a Mom to three, and I work both inside AND outside of the home. No way I'm going to have time to pick up my camera everyday! In knowing this, and knowing that I didn't want to set myself up for failure, I realized that Project 52 was the perfect fit for me and my lifestyle. My first attempt, in 2010, ended somewhere around week 33 (more than halfway there!). So When starting 2011's project, I was more determined than ever to complete it. And even though it's a small accomplishment, it feels AWESOME to have seen it all the way through!

Looking back at my photos has been almost like a mini trip down Memory Lane! It starts off with the entrance of the new year, of those creatively-challenged slow months between the holidays and Winter, and then it peaks into Spring and Summer, and into a finale of Autumn, and the Christmas Holiday - wow! Then there are those intimate moments in between - playing in the crisp Winter air with my little girl, closing in on the details at bath time - catching rays of sun bouncing off her hair, as she plays on the floor. It's not so much just about how your technical skill improves or evolves, but it's also about how you begin to project those images to the world, and how your own style starts to shine through.

I've also noticed that quite a few of this year's photos were taken with my camera phone. "Well, isn't that cheating?", you ask. Actually, no, it's not. The purpose of any photography project is to sharpen your skills. The tool you use is a means to an end, Your camera, no matter if it's a camera phone, point and shoot, or DSLR is only as good as the skill of the person holding it. Could I have learned more about mastering my DSLR had I only taken photos with my DSLR alone, instead of using my camera phone? Perhaps. But using my camera phone taught me a lot about composition, and its allowed me to capture some moments when lugging around a DSLR just would not have been feasible (or sensible). And when it comes down to it, that's what a project like P52 is about - capturing the moments.

If you haven't considered a photography challenge this year, I hope you will consider this one. Of all the more challenging resolutions we make every new year, this may be one of the easier ones to keep. One photo a week? I'm sure some of you take more photos than that without even realizing it. :) And my camera phone users (you know who you are!), you've shown me some amazing photos on Flickr, so don't feel left out!

With that being said, I invite you to join me this Wednesday, January 4th, to kick off Project 52, 2012! I'm hoping that it will be a great way to encourage one another, keep track of our progress, improve our skills, and make new friends. As briefly outlined in this post here, a linky will go up every Wednesday, for 52 weeks, where you can submit a photo that you have taken for the week and leave others some comment love - simple as that! And should we receive enough participation, there may even be some giveaways along the way!

Oh, and the nice thing is that, at the end, you can take those 52 photos and print them out for a scrapbook or keepsake, or even have a photo book professionally printed out using a service like Shutterfly or Snapfish!

My {Christmas} Card

Well, after years of talking about doing it, I finally shot and printed my own Christmas cards. With some ~~pushing~~ encouragement from Hubby, I pulled up some photos I had recently taken of Miss O, added to a template, and sent for printing via Snapfish – and my prints were ready for pick-up THAT afternoon at Walgreens!

*This is not a plug for Snapfish or Walgreens – I’m sure they couldn’t care less lol. With everyone going to these pro printers for Christmas cards, I just have to say I was really impressed with my last minute choice. And P.S. – a set of 20, with envelopes, was less than twenty bucks!

And here are some outtakes from our little impromptu photo session (I caught her as were headed out to school lol).

These were all quick and unedited, so don’t be too hard on me! :)

My {Christmas} Wishlist

Can you believe it?? Christmas is one week away! The closer it gets, the more I think about the things that would have made an awesome wishlist this year. Here are some of my top personal requests for Santa:

1) Nikon D7000

*swoon* I love my “Nikki”, but still dream of uprading one day.

2) Dell Laptop

I absolutely love the one I have now, but I sure would love a shiny, new one!

3) N2A MicroSD card for transforming my Nook Color into a fully-functioning Android Tablet.

4) A camera bag from XcessRize on Etsy.

5) A Mini Cupcake Maker AND a Cake Pop Maker.

6) A cookware set in RED to match my kitchen color theme.

7) Another external hard drive to back up all those photos.

Sensing a theme yet? No perfume, or jewelry, or frilly stuff for me! I am truly a Girl Geek O_O !

I’m sure I could keep this list going and going, but these are a few of the things that I will be picking up for myself after the New Year, and nothing is more motivating than a visual list, don’t you think? :)

This Or That {Thursday} & Some Holiday Goodness

Hands down, one of my favorite Holiday traditions is cooking and baking! The special meals prepared only during this time of year, the bonding time spent with my kids, and the happiness the food brings to the hearts of my loved ones, is a wonderful gift in itself.

For Christmas, we do a traditional Italian meal (thanks to Hubby’s side of the family!), which includes baked fish, lasagna, eggplant parmesan, chicken francaise, freshly baked cannoli, and lots of vino, to name just a few things on the menu!

But nothing beats the time spent baking and making memories with my little girl, who has now become my newest muse in the kitchen. She loooves to help me cook! You can take a look at her Gingerbread House here.

This Holiday, we’re going to make our traditional sugar cookies, my famous Pineapple Upside Down Cake, and we’re going to try something new – Gingerbread Cookies!

Wow!!! I cannot believe there’s only TWO weeks left in this year’s 52 Weeks Photography Project! I veered off track over halfway there last year, but not this year- I’m making it ALL the way!

Adding Social Media Icons To A {Blogger} Blog

I’ve received some questions, lately, about how to add Social Media Icons, like Pinterest, Facebook, Twitter, etc to a blog. If you’re using Blogger, than I an definitely help you out!

The first thing you’ll need to do is add the images (icons) that you want to use to an image hosting site. My preference is Picasa, but you can use Photobucket, Flickr, or any other site you like.

One the images are uploaded to your host, go to Blogger –> Design –> Page Elements –> Add A Gadget, then select the HTML/Javascript gadget. In the box, you’ll want to add this line of code:

Finding My {Christmas} Mojo

It’s beginning to look a lot like….well, I certainly can’t say Christmas! Well, it’s looking like Christmas as far as our tree and decorations, and the world around me, but it just doesn’t feel like Christmas.

Well, for starters, the last three months have been a whirlwind of doctor’s appointments and nursing my little girl back to health. She’s been sick three times since school started, missed her first ever school pictures, and got well again just in the nick of time for Halloween, only to fall ill again right after Thanksgiving.

Yeah.

So.

Then there’s this darn freaky Autumn weather we’ve been having here in New York. It’s been in the 60’s about 90% of the time since October, which is really weird. By now, low to mid-40’s is the norm. But so far, I’ve yet to pull out any of the heavy winter artillery – snow boots, scarves, puffy coats. And the ice cream truck’s been hanging out after school every day, when he and Mr.Softee should have headed for the hills over a month ago.

I haven’t even started my shopping yet.

When I think of Christmas, I think of cold, And SNOW. I know it’s not like that everywhere in the world, but that’s the way I know it in mine. It’s supposed to be cold enough for fleece blankets, fuzzy socks, and Caramel Brulee Lattes from Starbucks. And I guess until I get my cold weather, it just won’t feel like the Holidays. :(

*Update: The weather reports say we “may” just get some snow, after all. It’s actually predicted for further north, but we’ve been advised of the “possibility”. A girl can wish, right??

All I Want For {Christmas} Is…

Well, I guess it’s kinda self-explanatory! :-D

My baby girl is still battling her respiratory issues, but she finally went back to school today. She’s missed so much in the last three months, and I’m praying she doesn’t miss anymore. These early years are so important, not just academically, but because of the memories you create with your classmates and teachers. It’s a time in your life that you fondly remember forever because, once it’s gone, the memories are what you treasure the most, once you’re all grown up.

Anyway, I hope that you’ve decided to join me in my Holiday Photo Linky Party. Although I haven’t officially decided what or if a giveaway will be included, it sure would be nice to get together with all of you who have visited and become friends in the short 8 months that Tickle My Whimsy has been around.

On The First Day Of {Christmas}

Or maybe it’s the second, lol. Who knows! lol What I do know is that I’ve made this lovely holiday card template, for use on the web or print, just for you!

I’m going to try to make more card templates, or other digital goodies, as time permits, before the holidays are over.

{White Bean & Ham Bone Soup}

Thanksgiving is all about being grateful for our blessings, and enjoying a wonderful meal, but after Thanksgiving, we’re sometimes faced with what to do with all those leftovers. There are a million ways to recycle turkey, but what about that baked ham that you’ve sliced down as far to the bone as possible? Toss it? No, way! Make soup!

I basically took my leftover ham bone, and put it in my slow cooker, with some broth, white beans, and seasonings – delicious!

You’ll find my full recipe below!

What you’ll need:

- s slow cooker (crockpot), although you can make this right on top of the stove with the same results!
- a ham bone, with some meat still clinging to the bone
- chicken broth (2 small cans or 1 large can)
- seasonings – whatever you like. I used Adobo Sazon Total, garlic powder, and season salt.
- celery
- onion
- fresh garlic
- and basically, anything else you’d like to throw in!

Instructions:

Add your ham bone to a pot filled half with chicken broth and half with water. Make sure the bone in full submerged, or for larger bones, as much as possible. Add in 2 cups of white beans, chopped celery, onion, and garlic, and your seasonings to taste. Cook on high. Cooking times may vary, but once the meat has fallen from the bone, and the beans are soft, you’re done! The final step is to break apart your larger pieces of meat, remove any excess fat, and serve!

*Side Note: the bone I used was pretty large, so I had to cover my crockpot with a foil dome. My total cook time was about 7 hours, but possibly, had the bone fit completely into the pot and covered, cooking time may have been reduced.

On My {Thanksgiving} Menu

I’m keeping it pretty simple – and last minute, as usual! Family’s pretty spread out this year and, in all honesty, I don’t think I’m up for wearing myself out so much this Thanksgiving, that by the next day, I can barely move. So, I’m actually welcoming the simplicity this year.

So the menu will consist of, of course, turkey and a glazed ham, garlic and butter roasted potatoes, stuffing, mixed greens, candied yams, baked macaroni & cheese, and cranberry sauce. The most daring thing I’m considering making is monkey bread and a sweet potato pie, from scratch. Wish me luck!

DeviantArt has ALWAYS been one of my favorite places for graphic design resources and Photoshop goodies! There’s nothing wrong with purchasing actions and other essentials from your fave photographers or vendors, but when you’re looking for awesome extras such as actions, textures, and brushes, deviantArt is literally a plethora of awesome tools – and the majority of them are FREE!

Often overlooked, there are so many rare finds over at deviantArt. When you’re a beginning photographer on a budget, or a hobbyist not wanting to spend $135 for a set of actions, a quick search will bring you so many choices. The same goes for textures, brushes, and even digital papers.

Here are a few digital paper packs I recently found while browsing deviantart. They are perfect for so many design projects – blog backgrounds, blog elements, cards and photo templates, scrapbooking, as overlays – just to name a few. And they’re perfect for your upcoming Holiday projects!

*Please keep in mind, some of these are .PAT, which are Photoshop pattern files, and you will need a Photoshop program to utilize them. Most others are in regular .jpeg or .png format.

This tea set was given to me by my brother-in-law, who received it from an elderly neighbor whose house he was helping to fix up. She claims it’s over 100 years old, and if it really is, I have no idea why she’d want to part with it. But it’s mine now, and one day, I’m going to polish it and put on display in my home. I have a feeling there’s some true beauty under all that rust.

Pizza! {New York Style}

Since I’m on a “New York” kick, let’s talk about New York Style pizza. Not that mass produced, Pizza Hut-Papa John’s-Domino’s stuff. I’m talking about fresh-baked, right before your eyes, pizzeria pizza, straight out of the oven. Crispy crust, hot sauce, and lots of cheese!
This here is called a “Grandma Slice”. It’s square, thin, and the crust itself is crispy and cheesy. It’s topped with fresh tomato, fresh garlic, basil, and parmesan cheese. Like a bruschetta topping!

Fall Fashion {New York Style}

In New York, we do Fall fashion a little differently – well, we do a lot of things a little differently, but when it comes to fashion, it has to be functional and fashionable!

I LOVE puffy coats! I’m like the puffy coat queen! But I’m not talking about Michelin Man puffy, I’m talking about sexy, fitted, and stylish, like this little number above, found at Moncler.

And boots. What would a hot coat be without a hot pair of boots to match? These Chloe boots found here.

The {Red Cups} Are Back!

I don’t know why I always get so giddy this time of year over the Starbuck’s Red Cups. Maybe it’s the designer in me that looks forward to the new designs, or maybe it’s because this is the only time of year Starbucks serves my favorite latte – the Caramel Brulee! Whatever it is, I definitely look forward to it. The kids get to have their snow, and Santa, and sugar plum fairies, I get to have my Starbucks Red Cups! :-)

Friday Friday

Going back to work today. (I know I know it’s a Friday, but it’s really my Thursday). Just can’t take being in anymore. More than that, I can’t take being out of my routine. I’m one of those folks that thrive on routine and anything that deviates from my normal routine, makes me cranky and anxious.

Miss O is doing much better. Taking her medicine and battling that cough. Hopefully the time off from school and the weekend ahead will give her plenty of extra time to recuperate and be ready for school and for Halloween on Monday. I’d really hate for her to miss out on anything else.

I really just need to get my head out of this fog. I haven’t been feeling too great myself, but as we Moms often do, I’ve put my complaints to the side to look after everyone else in the household. I’m just ready to feel “connected” again. Being at work, commuting, observing what’s going on in the outside world – they’re all things that keep me feeling on top of what’s going on around me. I most certainly appreciated the time at home, taking care of my little girl, extra computer time, and being home with my family during the evenings, which is very rare due to my work schedule. But cabin fever has set it and I’m looking forward to getting back to normal and enjoying the weekend ahead.

Ok, I’ve rambled on enough! Great weekend, everyone!

My baby girl is home sick for the second day and second time since the school year began. A bad cough turned into an ear and upper respiratory infection which, after antibiotics appeared to get better, but has now turned into a bit of bronchitis.

Needless to say she’s on a different antibiotic now, and a medication to open up her breathing passages.

*sigh*

She also missed her class picture day. I know it’s just preschool but still you only get one. I was so glad to capture these photos of her last week on our way to school, before she got sick again. The beautiful outfit I had planned on her wearing is still hanging in the closet, but it won’t go to waste. It’s going to make a great Holiday outfit and we can still have her photos taken at a studio. :-)

I’d been wanting to take a picture of these flowers for a long time. Every day I pass them, on my way to take my daughter to and from school, but was always to chicken to take the shot. (I may have mentioned this before, but I live in New York and, unless you’re a tourist, and even tourists aren’t safe anymore, camera = terrorist lol). Not to make light, but unfortunately, this is the world we live in.

Anyhoo, I got up the nerve to slyly snap this photo, one rainy morning after dropping her off. I wish I could have photographed the whole house. The steps lead alllll the way up, and it’s probably one of the tallest new houses in the neighborhood. The balcony is draped with more beautiful pink and purple flowers, and vines just overflowing. It’s a relatively new construction, and it sits right right on the corner. It’s definitely an eye-catcher in an otherwise industrial neighborhood.

(And don’t you just love the editing filters?? Who says iPhones have all the fun!)
